Monnickendam
Monnickendam is a charming historic town on the Gouwzee lake, with a rich maritime history dating back to the 14th century. The town centre has more than 70 listed buildings, including the Gothic Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk church and the Waaggebouw weigh house, dating from 1668. Museum de Speeltoren houses the oldest carillon in the world that is still played and tells the story of Waterland and its inhabitants. The harbour is a lively backdrop of traditional sailing ships and is the departure point for boat trips on the Markermeer. Monnickendam offers a unique combination of history, culture and water experiences.
